Dr. Stuart Hutchison was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. He completed undergraduate studies in physics, mathematics, and philosophy before earning his medical degree from McGill University. After medical school, he completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the University of Calgary, where he later joined the faculty and built a distinguished academic and clinical career.

Early in his career, Dr. Hutchison served as a researcher at the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) at the University of California, San Francisco, where his work focused on the effects of tobacco smoke on endothelial and vascular function. This research contributed to the emerging understanding of second-hand smoke as a significant health risk and helped support public health initiatives across North America.

Dr. Hutchison joined the faculty of the University of Toronto and practiced at St. Michael’s Hospital for 13 years. During this time, he served as Director of Echocardiography and Vascular Ultrasound Laboratories and played a pivotal role in advancing cardiovascular imaging in Canada. He helped establish Canada's first accredited vascular ultrasound laboratory and achieved Level III certification in echocardiography, vascular ultrasound, and transesophageal echocardiography. His leadership and contributions earned multiple divisional, departmental, and provincial teaching awards.

In 2000, Dr. Hutchison returned to Calgary to join the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine as a Clinical Professor of Medicine. He served as Director of the City-Wide Echocardiography Service for eight years and received numerous teaching awards recognizing excellence in cardiovascular education. His clinical and research interests include pericardial disease, aortic disease, complex valvular heart disease, cardiovascular imaging, vascular ultrasound, intravascular ultrasound, echocardiography, intracardiac echocardiography, and cardiac and vascular computed tomography.

An accomplished author and educator, Dr. Hutchison has written more than 90 scientific manuscripts and contributed chapters to numerous medical textbooks. His work has been published in leading journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, The American Journal of Medicine, and The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). His primary research focus has been aortic dissection, particularly the role of intramural hematoma (IMH), for which his contributions have helped shape the contemporary understanding of the disease.

Dr. Hutchison is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the American Society of Echocardiography, the Society of Cardiac Computed Tomography, and the Society of Cardiac MRI.

​

Known for his commitment to education and mentorship, Dr. Hutchison continues to teach and inspire the next generation of physicians while maintaining an active clinical practice.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Hutchison is an avid adventurer and endurance athlete, having completed 20 marathons and even participated in an attempted rescue on Mount Everest.
